How to convert dry pasta to cooked pasta

Whether you’re cooking dinner for two or the entire family, it’s important to use the correct ingredient amount. When converting dry pasta to cooked pasta, you’ll need to know the weight of the cooked pasta, the weight of dry pasta and the ratio of dry pasta to cooked pasta. Our dry to cooked pasta calculator handles the hard work for you, but if you’re looking to do the work manually, you can use this formula:

Tips for cooking pasta perfectly

how to cook pasta perfectly

It’s one thing to convert dry pasta to cooked pasta, but it’s another to cook it to perfection. Here are a few tips for cooking pasta perfectly — or shall we say al dente?

  1. Use the correct pot size: Make sure your pot is large enough to accommodate the pasta without overcrowding.
  2. Add enough water: Use plenty of water, about 4-6 quarts per pound of pasta, to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking.
  3. Salt your water: Add salt to the boiling water before adding the pasta, which helps flavor the pasta from within and enhances its taste. Aim for 1-2 tablespoons of salt per gallon of water.
  4. Wait for a rolling boil: Allow the water to come to a rolling boil before adding the pasta. This ensures the pasta cooks evenly and maintains its shape.
  5. Stir occasionally: Stir the pasta occasionally to prevent it from sticking together and to the bottom of the pot.
  6. Test for doneness: Begin testing the pasta for doneness a few minutes before the recommended cooking time. The pasta should be tender yet still slightly firm to the bite, known as “al dente.”
  7. Save some pasta water: Before draining the pasta, reserve a cup of the cooking water. Use the starchy water to thin out thick sauces, add flavor and help the sauce adhere better to the pasta.
  8. Toss well: Mix the pasta and sauce thoroughly to ensure every piece is evenly coated.
  9. Serve immediately: Once the pasta is coated in sauce and heated through, serve it immediately.
