How To Cut Potato Wedges with Step-by-Step Instructions

Potato wedges are a favorite snack in the United States, whether served as an appetizer, bar snack, or finger food. But how do you make this starch-heavy dose of goodness? What’s the best way to cut potato wedges, and how can you prepare them at home? Let’s take a look at how you can cut and make potato wedges easily at home.

What equipment to use

To prepare potato wedges, you’ll need:

  • A baking sheet
  • A sharpened, medium-length knife
  • Vegetable oilolive oil, or sunflower oil
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Ground parsley, oregano, or rosemary
  • The dressing or condiment of your choice, whether ketchup, BBQ sauce, or something else

This is by no means the end of what you can do with your potato wedges. If you prefer using mayonnaise as a dip for your wedges, go for it. If you want to drizzle your wedges with parmesan before putting them in the even, do it!

What potatoes make the best potato wedges?

Russet potatoes are generally the best type of potato to use for wedges. In addition to their chunky size, Russets have thick skins, and their flesh lends itself well to wedges. To ensure that your potato wedges are relatively consistent in terms of size, try to buy potatoes that are roughly around the same size.

If you want to try something different and a little lighter, use sweet potatoes instead of russets.

Step 2. Dress the potato slices

Pour a tablespoon or two of vegetable oil or olive oil into a bowl. Next, place your potato slices into the bowl and use your hand to coat the potatoes in oil. Then, season the potatoes with salt. After 15 minutes, use a spatula to toss the potato slices to ensure that each side is evenly cooked. Cook for another 10 minutes or until the potato wedges are crisped all over.

Step 4. Serve your potato wedges

Remove your potato wedges from the baking sheet and place them on a large plate. Serve with the condiments of your choosing: Ketchup, mustard, BBQ sauce, salsa, or another dip or sauce of your choosing!
