Instacart CEO Fidji Simo’s Statement on Historic SNAP Expansion

Aug 16, 2021

SAN FRANCISCO — Instacart CEO Fidji Simo today issued the following statement after the Department of Agriculture announced a significant expansion to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program.

“We commend the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Biden Administration for today announcing the largest ever expansion of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program. This is a vital step toward ensuring that all Americans have access to healthy, nutritious foods.

At Instacart, we believe that every American family should have access to the food they love and more time to enjoy it together. Now more than ever, as the pandemic continues to drive historically high rates of food insecurity, we recognize and embrace our unique opportunity—and responsibility—to help increase access to affordable, nutritious food for more Americans.

We are proud to partner with grocers nationwide to offer Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) SNAP online payments. Since launching our first EBT SNAP partnership in October 2020, we have partnered with more than 30 brick-and-mortar retailers spanning more than 5,400 stores to provide EBT SNAP online payment access to Americans in 39 states and Washington, D.C. We continue to add new partners every month, and we are committed to expanding EBT SNAP access to even more Americans.

In this work, we are grateful for our partnership with the Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service. We look forward to continuing to work with the agency toward our shared goal to make fresh and nutritious food more easily accessible to more Americans.”
