Instacart Celebrates Historic Victory in California with Prop 22 Upheld

Today marks an historic moment and a landmark victory for app-based workers across the state of California, as the California Supreme Court has upheld Proposition 22.

Instacart shoppers consistently and overwhelmingly tell us they value their flexibility and independence. The Court’s decision preserves access to the flexible earnings opportunities they want and the important benefits provided under Prop 22. We applaud the Court for protecting the clear interests of shoppers and upholding the will of the nearly 10 million California voters, who overwhelmingly passed Prop 22 in 2020. 

Instacart is proud to have created earnings opportunities for hundreds of thousands of Californians and contributed billions of dollars in earnings in California over the past 12 years. Shoppers in California have earned more than $3 billion on Instacart since Prop 22 took effect. Instacart has also paid more than $40 million in healthcare subsidies directly to shoppers.

We’d also like to take this moment to thank the Instacart shopper community for their continued dedication to supporting customers in their local communities.
