Partnering for a healthier future: Instacart becomes the first company to join the GW Global Food Institute’s Leadership Council

Today, I’m proud to share that Instacart is joining the George Washington University Global Food Institute (GFI) Leadership Council alongside our partners at The Rockefeller Foundation. Founded by chef, author and humanitarian José Andrés, GFI is focused on changing the world through the power of food – a mission that deeply aligns with what we stand for at Instacart. We’re honored to be the first private sector company to join the council to help transform people’s lives and improve the health of our communities.

The GFI Leadership Council is designed to convene industry-leading organizations dedicated to advancing sustainable and equitable food systems, and we’re honored to be included. Together with the GFI team, The Rockefeller Foundation and other fellow council partners, we’ll combine our expertise and resources to develop innovative solutions that address the critical challenges surrounding food insecurity, nutrition access and health equity. Our collaboration will support groundbreaking research, advocate for policy change and identify new ways to leverage our reach and Instacart Health technology to make nutritious food more accessible and affordable to more families.

According to the USDA, more than 47 million people in the U.S. faced food insecurity in 2023, and more than 100 million people live with at least one chronic condition that can be caused or made worse by a poor diet. It’s clear that there is a vital connection between access to nutritious food and over overall health and wellbeing – making impactful, cross-sector action more urgent than ever.

Through our Instacart Health initiative, we’re leveraging the power of our platform and partnerships to connect more than 98% of U.S. households with nutritious food. We’re building and scaling food as medicine programs with leaders across the industry, using our technology to advance research with leading academic and health institutions, and advocating for policies that expand access to nutritious food for all. We feel strongly that public-private partnerships are crucial to driving meaningful change, and through our new partnership with GFI, we’ll continue to support research, foster innovation, and advocate for policies that help bridge the critical gap between nutrition and community health.

Addressing the most complex food challenges requires everyone to come to the table, and we’re proud to join forces with leaders like GFI and The Rockefeller Foundation to create a more sustainable and equitable food future for all.
