Preserving Independent, Flexible Work in California
Californians have voted yes on Proposition 22, ushering in historic new offerings for on-demand workers while maintaining their independence and flexibility. We believe this outcome is a win for shoppers, customers and retailers in California.
Proposition 22 was created to unlock a better, more progressive solution for all Californians that reflects the preferences of app-based drivers. With this important vote, shoppers in California who have delivered groceries and goods with Instacart will stay independent and continue to earn when they want and where they want. They’ll also receive guaranteed earnings, as well as additional protections and benefits that support a more modern workforce. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more information directly with our California shoppers about the new offerings they can expect as a result of Proposition 22 passing.
For our customers, more Californians than ever before are now relying on Instacart — from parents with full-time jobs and seniors who can’t get to the grocery store to individuals with mobility limitations. With the passing of Proposition 22, we’re able to preserve what’s best about our model for shoppers, while continuing to serve as an essential, affordable and accessible service for customers statewide.
Instacart has also emerged as an integral ecommerce partner for brick-and-mortar grocers. In California alone, we partner with 117 retailers across more than 4,700 grocery store locations. These are national, regional and local retailers that many Californians have shopped from for decades. Now, more than ever, grocers need solutions like Instacart to connect with customers, bring their stores online, and grow their business. With the passage of Proposition 22, we can continue to serve as the chief ally to grocers across California.
We know that many policymakers across the country recognize that the future of work looks different and requires new thinking. We look forward to continuing to work with policymakers nationwide to find progressive solutions that acknowledge the flexible income opportunities shoppers want while providing them with new earnings guarantees, protections and benefits.
Thank you to all the communities we serve across California for your ongoing support — we look forward to continuing to serve as an essential service statewide for years to come.
