Sazón Serves Up Latinx Heritage Month at Instacart
In honor of Latinx Heritage Month (September 15 — October 15), our Latin employee resource group, Sazón, served up a full month of programming for members of the community and allies. While cultural heritage month celebrations look different this year as we continue to work remotely, the Sazón community found plenty of ways to spice up the month and celebrate the Latin community and its rich history and culture.
Company Meeting
Sazón kicked off the month with a special presentation at our company meeting. The co-leads of the ERG spoke to employees about the community’s mission, upcoming initiatives, and how members and allies can get involved throughout the month and beyond. Additionally, the co-leads discussed the importance of voter education, registration, and making your voice heard as we lead up to the presidential election. According to Pew Research Center, this year is the first time Hispanics are the largest racial or ethnic minority group in the electorate — accounting for 13.3% of eligible voters.
En La Cocina — Virtual Cooking Classes
Food is a big part of Latin culture. After all, the ERG’s name, Sazón, is a reference to the flavorful combination of spices that is the secret ingredient in many Latin dishes. To bring people together around the virtual table, the Sazón community hosted a series of interactive cooking classes where employees learned how to prepare Mole — a traditional sauce from Mexican cuisine.
A Penne For Your Thoughts with Julissa Arce
As part of our guest speaker series, A Penne For Your Thoughts, Sazón hosted a virtual fireside discussion with author, businesswoman, and immigrant rights advocate, Julissa Arce. In the talk, Julissa shared how she rose to the top of the corporate ladder on Wall Street both as a Latina woman and undocumented immigrant as well as her Latinx experience in corporate America.
Julissa left our employees with inspiring wise words and sage advice on the importance of advocating for yourself:
“What I hope to impart on people is that you are better than ‘good enough’ to be in the position you hold. Take the reins of your own career, be your own biggest champion and negotiator. If you don’t, nobody else will. Advocate for yourself and remind yourself that you’ve worked really hard to get to where you are.”
— Julissa Arce
Thank you to our Sazón community and allies for celebrating Latinx Heritage Month with us!
