Taking Action During Hunger Action Month®

Every September, Feeding America®, food banks, and many other organizations across the country come together to commemorate Hunger Action Month®, a month-long campaign to raise awareness of hunger in our country and promote ways for individuals everywhere to get involved with the cause. As a Feeding America Supporting Partner for the past three years, Instacart was proud to honor Hunger Action Month. Here are some of the ways our teams took action:

We listened & learned from leaders at Feeding America.

To kick-off the second week of Hunger Action Month®, we listened and learned about how food insecurity disproportionately impacts Black, Latinx, and Native American communities in a fireside chat with Feeding America’s Chief Development Officer Casey Marsh and Director of Native/Tribal Partnerships Mark Ford, hosted by Jennifer Sutton, Instacart’s Senior Director of Diversity, Equity & Belonging. In 2020, an estimated 24% of Black individuals and just over 19% of Latinx individuals experienced food insecurity. Additionally, compared to White non-Hispanic individuals, Black individuals were 3.2 times more likely and Latinx individuals were 2.5 times more likely to experience food insecurity. This conversation energized our team to continue learning and to give back — just in time for our annual Week of Service.

We learned, raised awareness and gave back during our annual Week of Service.

During the third week of September, we invited all Instacart Carrots to complete daily service challenges for our annual Week of Service. For #WearItWednesday, we flooded Instacart virtual meetings with a sea of orange, the official color of Hunger Action Month®.

On #ThinkingThursday, we generated more than 80 new ideas about how Instacart can better address food insecurity through its product and service.

Finally, on #FoodBankFriday, Instacart team members collectively donated more than 3,000 non-perishable food staples and essentials to food banks within our communities.

Instacart teams donated funds to help address food insecurity.

Throughout the month, Instacart team members donated $27,000+ to more than 300 causes and organizations across the U.S. and Canada.

We also announced three new partnerships with No Kid Hungry, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and World Central Kitchen in support of our mission to create a world where everyone has access to the food they love and more time to enjoy it together.

Although Hunger Action Month® has come to an end, the important work to address food insecurity will continue as hunger rates rise in North America. The actions taken this month are just one example of how we’re committed to sustainably nourishing communities most in need.
