Turn Your Groceries Into Good This Giving Tuesday
From Giving Tuesday through December 7, customers with the latest version of the Instacart app can choose a national or local nonprofit and one meal will be donated on their behalf for each order at no additional cost
Due to the lasting effects of the pandemic, more than 38 million people including 12 million children in the United States are experiencing food insecurity, or a lack of access to nutritious food. Additionally, food banks are currently struggling with labor shortages and inflation, and are being forced to reduce their portion sizes due to the growing cost of many food staples including meat, chicken, dairy, and eggs. To help improve access to food in the communities we serve across the United States and Canada, Instacart will join the GivingTuesday global movement for generosity by enabling customers to turn their groceries into good each time they shop the digital aisles with Instacart during the week of Giving Tuesday.
Each time a customer places an Instacart order starting on November 30 through December 7, they can choose a national or local nonprofit and one meal* will be donated on their behalf for each order at no additional cost to them. Customers must be using the latest version of the Instacart app to unlock the donation functionality.
“Instacart is honored to use its platform for good with its first Giving Tuesday campaign,” said Carolyn Everson, President at Instacart. “Our mission is to create a world where everyone has access to the food they love and more time to enjoy it together. With this campaign, we’re giving customers an easy, personalized way to turn their groceries into good and support local families in need this holiday season.”
Starting on Giving Tuesday, customers can visit instacart.com or open the latest version of the Instacart app, click on the Giving Tuesday banner, and select an organization to support from a list of international, national, and local nonprofits.
The featured list will include international and national nonprofits, including Feeding America and Second Harvest Canada, in addition to more than 50 local nonprofits fighting food insecurity that will be tailored to the customer’s zip code. Many of these local organizations focus on specific communities that are disproportionately affected by food insecurity – such as veterans, seniors, children, LGBTQ2IA+, immigrants, and refugees – giving customers the opportunity to earmark their meal donation to an organization in their area that’s meaningful to them. What’s more, there’s no limit to how many meals can be donated per customer. Those who make multiple orders throughout the week will have the opportunity to donate a meal each time and can either direct the donation to the same organization or a new one for each order. Customers can track the impact of their orders as well as Instacart’s broader impact during the week of Giving Tuesday by reviewing the in-app Impact Report.
“The long-lasting effects of the pandemic are driving food prices up, which is increasing people’s need for food assistance in our country,” said Lauren Biedron, Vice President of Corporate Partnerships at Feeding America. “Instacart has distributed nearly 7 million meals over the last 3 years to the Feeding America network of food banks. We are proud to continue our partnership especially through the week of Giving Tuesday to help provide nourishment to communities facing hunger.”
As a leader in online grocery, we have a responsibility to address hunger and food insecurity and lean on the expertise of our nonprofit partners like Feeding America and Second Harvest Canada. We are grateful for their partnership and to be able to contribute to their efforts to bring food to those who need it most.
New to Instacart? Grocery shopping and giving back couldn’t be any easier. Simply download the latest version of the app for free on the App Store or Google Play.
*Offer applies to all orders placed between 11/30/21 12:00 AM PST and 12/8/21 12:00 AM PST. The cost of a meal varies by nonprofit. The nonprofit you choose will receive at least $1 for every 10 meals donated. You must choose a nonprofit before placing your order. Your chosen nonprofit will be your default for all orders during the offer period. Does not apply to orders that are canceled or fully refunded. Donations to nonprofits will be made to PayPal Giving Fund, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. PPGF receives the donations and distributes 100% to the nonprofits, with Instacart covering all applicable processing fees.
